Valentina Guevara is a visual artist specializing in ceramics and painting. Working primarily in ceramics, she enjoys the feel of clay between her hands. The changes to the medium throughout the sculpting and firing processes create a visceral connection to her work. Valentina fed her passion for ceramics during her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia (2006) and she continues to develop her skills working at Mosaika Art & Design. Traditional Japanese floral patterns are incorporated into her ceramic work, for their simple elegance lends them to the medium.
Valentina moved from Toluca, Mexico to Montreal over a decade ago and describes her relationship with Mexico, as akin to the monarch butterfly who flies back and forth, feeling at home in both places. Valentina maintains a deep connection to her Mexican roots and finds inspiration in work of Mexican painters, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Maria Izquierdo, amongst others. Valentina’s paintings often incorporate floral designs, and she names Georgia O’Keeffe and Tina Modotti as two of her main influences.
